My Neighborhood Math

This is an image of the local movie theater in my neighborhood. This theater is located in the Eastwood Town Center which is where most people in the area enjoy their leisure activities. Teachers can use this image to create a fun open ended problem for students. Tommy is a student at MSU and he wants to go to a movie after class. He has $30.00 to spend  on a Friday night. He would also like some popcorn and a slushy to enjoy the movie with. How much money will Tommy have left over after he leaves the movies?

Regular admission: $8.50
Student admission: $7.50
Popcorn: $3.75
Slushy: $2.50
Popcorn + Slushy combo: $5.50

This Little Caesars is one of three pizza parlors in my area. I enjoy going here because the pizza is cheaper than anywhere else around East Lansing. Mrs. Johnson is planning to bring pizza for her second grade students on Monday. There are 26 students in the class and two teachers. One large pizza at Little Caesars has 12 slices in it. How many pizzas should Mrs. Johnson buy so that everyone can have at least one slice of pizza?
